Low Back Pain

We have all heard that low back pain is one of the most common reasons adults will seek medical help, there are many misconceptions about back pain that get in the way to recovery.

There is absolutely a time and a place for imaging studies, but they are often over-used. MRI and x-ray findings can create unnecessary fear and do not always explain the cause of pain, they often point to normal signs of aging.

Activities labeled as bad can create limiting changes in activity and can cause overall changes in how resilient we see our bodies. Activities like running and squats are not bad for your back. Poor dosage with faulty progressions, not considering the phase of rehab, or current capacity can lead to pain.

Interestingly pain severity does not serve as an accurate gauge for tissue damage. Pain is influenced by many factors including stress, emotion, neural pathways, and biochemical processes.

Movement, progressive exercise programs, and an active lifestyle promote back resilience through desensitization, and tissue remodeling.

Resting and avoiding all exercise and activity is not the answer to recovery and can prolong or worsen symptoms.

Here are some goals I have for clients I help with low back pain:

  1. Become confident in taking care of your back and controlling pain to fearlessly get back to what you love.

  2. Understand how movement, sleep, stress, nutrition, and activity modification can affect pain.

  3. Build resilience through progressive exercise programming that improves overall capacity for functional and sport related activities.

I am here to help you overcome injury, build resilience, and take control of your recovery. Reach out to connect with me if you are interested in individualized one on one sessions with me at Reset PT in El Dorado Hills, CA.
