Humans are not machines that we can simply apply data towards. The information gleaned from valuable research studies has the power to positively impact your rehabilitation and performance, but that alone is not enough to have a positive impact.
As a whole evidence based practice includes 3 major parts:
#1 Evidence from research
#2 Evidence from you, the patient
#3 Evidence from the physical therapist
Together these 3 interacting and dynamic elements play a vital role in getting you feeling and performing your best.
#1 Evidence from research:
The first thing that comes to mind for most of us when we hear evidence based practice is research. At Reset Physical Therapy that happens in the form of on-line courses, published articles, and in-person courses. As I reflect on the year it is easy to say that the most enjoyable course I completed was the full day live course I took in Pullman, WA, Treating the Jiu-Jitsu Athlete. You can be assured that your care is informed by the latest developments in the field of orthopedic physical therapy, exercise science, and Jiu-Jitsu based research at Reset Physical Therapy, because my goal is for you to make progress as fast as you can, and for you to have the best possible outcome.
#2 Evidence from the patient/client:
The human experience is complex; there are so many interacting layers to being human.
The evidence or information you bring to physical therapy plays a crucial role in your success. Truly listening to who you are, what your day to day life is like, how you stay active, and your story of what brings you to seek help is part of the process at Reset Physical Therapy. Also part of the process is seeing how you move and how your body respond to care. Without you, it would be a standardized program, not personalized care. You will not be handed a general exercise hand-out created for the masses, you will receive a program of exercises and hands on care that is informed by evidence based research, but hand picked for you.
#3 Evidence from the physical therapist:
We have talked about evidence from research and from you. There last piece is the evidence the PT brings to the table. Over the years I have helped many individuals in physical therapy and it has been very rewarding experience. Low back pain, ACL repair, ankle sprain, neck pain, RC repair, and so on. However, what a clinician brings to the table stretches beyond their professional experiences. Rehabilitation of my own injuries as well as staying active with my own adventures has also shaped how I approach physical therapy. As an active PT I have professional and personal experience that helps me relate to and understand the weekend warriors and athletes that want to keep moving. There is more info in the about me section of my website about the activities and hobbies we might share. There is an intrinsic advantage to having a PT who has experience in your sport! So if you Jiu Jitsu I am your PT in the El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, and Folsom area.
So if we are chatting about evidence based practice this is what I am talking about. At Reset Physical Therapy I strive to provide the best care for my patients and clients and this is part of how I make it happen.
